What are the differences between DTG and DTF printing?

Neither the advertising nor the clothing industry could do without the possibility of printing on textiles. On various types of materials, among others, the company's logo or original graphics are applied, which makes a given piece of clothing look attractive. Two technologies are currently used for printing on clothing - DTG and DTF. What exactly does that mean and what is the difference between them?

Printing technique

DTG printing (Direct to Garment) is a method of applying an image to clothing, consisting in heating the graphics in a special press directly in the material. DTG uses a wide palette of colors and reflects the design with high accuracy. DTF (Direct to Film) printing technology has gone a step further. In this case, the image is printed not on the fabric, but on PET foil, which is then transferred to the material and fixed. The colors of the DTF print perfectly match the design, because they do not react with the color of the fabric.

Durability of the print

The print made in DTG technology is durable, although its quality decreases with the wear of the fabric on which it was applied. After several dozen washings, the colors of the graphics clearly fade, and the shapes lose their clarity. This issue does not occur with DTF printers. They are extremely durable and do not depend on the properties of the fabric. They are also flexible, so they do not start to crumble.

Printer Usage

In practice, DTG printers are actually used only for cotton clothing, in particular for printing on T-shirts. Modern DTF printing gives the possibility of printing various types of fabrics, including polyester, which is commonly used for the production of sportswear. The work of DTF printers is also much more effective than printing in DTG technology.
